Tingri

Tingri: The Tingri area is a large tract of over 1000 sq km centering around the headwaters of the phung (Arun) River.  Most of its 15000 inhabitants live on the Tingri plan with the dingri gangaar, commonly known as Dingri (old dingri).  Shegar xian ( Xegar)  is known as New Tingri 67 km to the west, is the prefecture’s headquarters, the Xegar monastery, perched a ridge overlooks the small town.  Pastoralists live in the hundred or so villages in the surrounding valleys.

Tingri used to be an important trading post where Sherpas from Nepal exchanged rice, grain and iron for Tibetan wool. livestock and salt.
